Paige & Sean | August 23, 2015

Paige & Sean #1 (Blog)It’s official. Chris is my favorite Paige & Sean #2 (Blog)father of the bride from 2015. In a unique twist of events this local businessman and self-appointed wedding planner organized every aspect of his daughter’s big day. Although he may not have been the obvious choice, with the bride and groom living states away and the grooms parents far from the North Carolina coast, Chris was the only choice. So he set to work calling vendors, sampling menus and interviewing photographers.  He handled every detail including booking a hotel room next to the Oceanic for the bride and bridesmaids to get ready and renting a snow cone machine which helped keep the guests cool while waiting for the ceremony to begin.

As we tied the last starfish on the arbor two photographers approached and I suddenly realized one of them looked very familiar.  To my surprise is it was Chelsea, a past Beachside Occasions bride who got married at Carolina Beach a few months earlier.  After reminicing for a few minutes it was time to sample the snow cones!  Chris was right; the sweet slushy treat was the perfect start to a toasty August afternoon wedding.

It should come asPaige & Sean #3 (Blog) no surprise that my favorite moment of the day was watching Chris give his daughter away.  Sure, most fathers share a unique bond with their little girl, but today this father daughter bond seemed extra special.

Meredith & Zach #1 (Blog)

Meredith & Zach #3 (Blog)The first time I met Meredith and Zach we were standing on Crystal Pier in down pouring rain. As we stood huddled up against the restaurant I could sense their concern.  This is definitely not the way I want to meet any bride and groom.  Yes, occasionally beach weddings do get rained out, but believe it or not this rarely happens.  The rain usually clears or we get a break in the clouds long enough to squeeze in the ceremony.  Fortunately this isolated shower wasn’t enough to deter this couple from having a seaside ceremony.

A few short weeks later it was time to say “I do,” so back to the Oceanic we went.  In true August style it was hot, but completely dry.  In fact it turned out to be a great beach day.  The restaurant was packed, but the patrons were super polite.  Many crowded the rail with cell phones in hand hoping to snap Meredith & Zach #2 (Blog) a cute picture of the bride and groom.  Standing on the beach not a peep could be heard from the busy crowd standing on the pier above.  However that all changed at the conclusion of the ceremony when wedding guests and restaurant patrons joined together with celebratory cheers as the couple shared their first kiss as husband and wife.

Xuan & Brian#1(Blog)
I must admit I’m a bit Xuan & Brian(Blog) partial to the Oceanic; it is after all where Paul and I shared our first date, admiring the ocean and swapping stories over Oysters Rockefeller one crisp March afternoon. Aside from sentimental reasons, I love this place because of all the interesting facets which make it a great venue for beach weddings. The magnificent pier, rustic old bench and cool entry stairs provide a really unique backdrop for photos. I also love that this venue has a private ocean view room which makes for a great reception space and serves as the bridal Xuan & Brian #2(Blog)suite prior to the ceremony.

Excitement turned to nerves as the bride watched her guests take their seats on the beach from the third floor window of the Oceanic. It can be a bit intimidating to walk down the aisle knowing every eye is looking at you. Fortunately fear of falling is unfounded, tears of joy are met with a sweet embrace and anxiety wanes the moment you lay eyes on the groom.

With the ceremony in full swing, I joined a group of onlookers midway down the pier Xuan & Brian #3(Blog) for an awesome arial view of the tree planting ceremony. A novel twist on the unity candle or sand ceremony, the tree planting ceremony symbolizes the joining of two into one, the putting down of roots and the strength and longevity of the marriage. After the wedding the tree is replanted in special place where the couple can continue to watch it grow. What a cool idea!

Bridgette & Todd | August 31, 2013

Bridgette & Todd #1 (Blog) Bridgette & Todd #5(Blog) I first learned about the “Three Second Kiss” from Wilmington photographer Bill Parr during a rehearsal about three years ago and have shared it with every bride since. According to Bill, the first kiss should last at least three seconds Bridgette & Todd #3(Blog) to allow the photographer to get a really good shot. We go a step further and advise our brides to practice the first kiss (or at least discuss it) prior to the ceremony. Nerves, excitement, and a front row full of parents Bridgette & Todd #6(Blog) and grandparents have caused more than one couple to fumble the kiss. Believe it or not, sharing a first kiss can be really hard to do under pressure without a little practice. Fortunately, Bridgett and Todd’s first kiss was magical. When the big moment arrived, this couple shared a kiss fit for the silver Bridgette & Todd #2(Blog) screen complete with dramatic dip and roaring audience applause. It was certainly one of the most memorable first kisses of the year!

Nick & Lora | July 6, 2013

30 Aug

Lora & Nick #3(Blog) Who says the ceremony Lora & Nick #2(Blog)has to come first? By scheduling their ceremony after dinner this couple maximized time with their guests and enjoyed a cool, crowd free wedding on one of the busiest beach weekends of the year. Around 7:30pm, guests were invited down to the beach while the bride and groom slipped away for a quick wardrobe change. Lora, escorted by her brother, carried a bouquet made of shells she and Nick found on various beach vacations during their courtship. Lora & Nick #1(Blog)At the end of the aisle Nick waited nervously for a first look at his bride in her dress. Following the first kiss, the couple and their guests continued the celebration at the Oceanic with champagne and wedding cake. It was truly a unique and memorable wedding for a fun and creative couple.
