Who says a beach wedding has to be a casual affair?  Ballgowns do surprising well in the sand as do heels (as long as you have a chunky heel and an ankle strap).  Your wedding day should be a reflection of your personality and style!  Feeling formal?  I say go for it!

When you work a ceremony where the couple has this much fun, loving your job is easy. Yes, wedding planning definitely involves a lot of time and details, but when the big day arrives its best to relax and enjoy. However, this is often easier said than done.

For many brides the ceremony is the stressful part. Walking down the aisle with every eye on you can be a bit intimidating. Tripping over the dress, getting tongue-tided during the vows and botching the first kiss in front of family and friends are frequent worries all brides share. However, these worries rarely materialize.

My advice… sweat the details during the planning process, it will definitely pay-off.  However, when the big day arrives, relish the moment. Stacey and Chris certainly did, everyone did (including our crew)!

Alison & Andy #1 (Blog)

Although we can’t promise our brides perfect weather on their wedding day, we do promise to do everything possible to make the ceremony happen on the beach.  So far our success rate has been pretty good thanks in large part to our hard working, creative crew.

The weekend of OctoberAlison & Andy #22(Blog) 2nd brought torrential rain to the North Carolina Coast.  The combination of Hurricane Joaquin passing well to the east, an upper level low pressure system off the Southeast U.S. coast and a stalled cold front resulted in 16 inches of rain. As noted in my previous posts one of my favorite things about working at Shell Island is the vast beach front. We never have to worry about the tide line here. In fact, the distance to the ocean is so great that we often end up transporting grandparents back and forth to the ceremony in the Beachside Occasions truck.

However, on the morning of October 3rd we arrived to find the ocean all the way up to the hotel. Needless to say the bride and her dad were very concerned. After prompting Alison’s bridesmaids to get her another mimosa we headed to the beach with her dad to check out our options. Recognizing there was little chance that the 4-foot-deep tide covering the ceremony location would subside before our predetermined start time we headed south looking for a dry spot large enough to accommodate our large pavilion and 48 chairs.  As luck would have it, we found just enough beach one access down and with the bride’s okay set-up commenced at Access #2.

Alison & Andy #3(Blog)This wedding taught me two things.  First, there is usually (not always) plenty of beach in front of the Shell Island Resort.  Second, torrential rain is no match for a flexible bride and a resourceful Beachside Occasions crew.

I love gold on the beach.  It photographs Melena & Dave #3 (Blog)really well and goes great with almost any other color.  Although the majority of our brides typically select a color package to match their bridesmaid dresses I must admit, some of my favorite weddings include color packages in contrasting shades.  This is great advice especially for brides with unique color selections.  Instead of driving yourself crazy trying to match your maids consider introducing a second color.  Navy, gold and plum top my list of favorites as they compliment almost any shade.

June 5th was a beautiful day for a beach wedding.  Aside from perfect weather there were very few people visiting the beach creating a intimate feel.  With almost no humidity and an ever so subtle breeze even those in full suits looked cool and dry as they left theMelena & Dave #2 (Blog) beach and headed to the reception.

I loved how this couple decided to include their moms in the sand ceremony.  It certainly made for a touching moment and a sweet photo.  As the couple recessed down the aisle to “A Beautiful Day” by U2, I couldn’t help but smile.  I can’t imagine a better song to describe this wedding.
